Everyone uses lube. Almost nobody puts it where it actually matters. You smear it on the shaft, on the entrance, and hope it's enough — except the friction that causes problems happens further in, and no amount spread on the outside really gets there.

The XL Lube Tube from CalExotics is an applicator: a 23 ml tube with a thin shaft, a rounded tip and a plunger. You fill it with the lube of your choice, insert the shaft a few centimetres, and push. The lube lands exactly where it does its actual work.

Two finger loops frame the barrel, like on a syringe: you hold it firmly with one hand and control the flow to the millimetre, even with slippery fingers. The body is seamless, made of translucent ABS with a TPE cap, phthalate-free. It comes apart, rinses out, and can be reused indefinitely.

What it actually changes

You use less lube, not more. It's counterintuitive but that's what happens: placed right, it works immediately. No more emptying a whole tube trying to compensate for bad placement.

Fewer pauses. Reapplying lube mid-scene breaks the rhythm and cools everyone down. One good dose placed upfront lasts a lot longer.

The bottom's comfort moves up a category. Proper internal lubrication is the difference between a comfortable penetration and one you grit your teeth through. That's not a minor detail, it's the whole point.

It's also a safety matter. A well-lubricated anal lining takes fewer micro-tears. Fewer micro-tears means less bleeding, less irritation, and lower infection risk. A £12 applicator is probably the best safety-to-price ratio in the whole catalogue.

You keep using your usual lube. The tube arrives empty. Fill it with whatever you already use — water-based, silicone, hybrid, thick gel or thin liquid.

How to use it

Filling it. Pull the plunger out, pour the lube into the tube, put the plunger back. For a thick gel, dip the tip into the tub and pull the plunger to draw it up. 23 ml is enough for three to four comfortable applications.

Lubricate the outside of the shaft before inserting. A dry applicator against dry mucous membrane is exactly what you're trying to avoid.

Insert gently, and not deep. Three to five centimetres is plenty. The tip is rounded and the shaft is thin, but this isn't a penetration toy: you're not going for depth or sensation.

Push slowly. Emptying all 23 ml at once is unpleasant and totally unnecessary. A third of the tube is enough for one application, and you can top up afterwards.

Withdraw and let the temperature settle. Lube straight out of a cold bottle causes a reflex contraction. A minute of waiting and the body relaxes on its own.

Prep it beforehand. Filled and within reach, it doesn't break anything. Digging around at the bottom of a drawer mid-action annoys everyone.

Uses you wouldn't think of

With a plug or dildo. Lubricating the toy isn't enough: the lube wipes off at the entrance. A dose placed inside before insertion changes comfort completely, especially with wider diameters.

For advance prep. One application ten minutes ahead, giving it time to spread and everything to relax, and the rest goes noticeably better.

For fisting and larger diameters, the applicator becomes genuinely essential. The volume needed simply can't be placed by hand.

With a condom. An internal dose plus lube on the condom itself is the combination that most reduces breakage risk from friction. Just check your lube is latex-compatible: water-based or silicone, never oil.

For dosing anything else. The tube accepts any liquid or gel. Some people use it for other intimate prep — it cleans up well and doesn't hold onto smells.

Cleaning and lifespan

Before and after every use: take the plunger apart, wash inside and out with warm water and mild soap. The body is seamless, so nothing gets trapped anywhere — that's the whole design point of this thing.

Rinse thoroughly. Soap residue against a mucous membrane is irritating. Run water through it until it comes out clear.

Dry completely before storing. Plunger out, tube open, air-dried. An applicator stored damp develops smells and worse.

Never leave it filled between sessions. The lube stagnates, degrades and becomes a breeding ground. Fill it right before, empty and wash it right after.

Don't sterilise it in boiling water. ABS warps under heat. Warm water and soap is all it needs.

Personal use. Like anything that touches mucous membranes, don't share it between partners without thoroughly cleaning it between uses — and ideally, one per person.
