Poppers, named after the “pop” sound when opening the bottle, are a family of liquids called alkyl nitrites. Their vapors can be inhaled and produce euphoric and aphrodisiac effects.

The first one, amyl nitrite, was manufactured in 1844 and was used to relieve angina pectoris (chest pain). It is believed that the boom in recreational use began in the 1960s. After restrictions on its production and use, several other related alkyl nitrites appeared. These new formulas are: isopropyl nitrite, isobutyl nitrite, and butyl nitrite.

Poppers are sold as a liquid in small bottles, often with colorful packaging. At room temperature, the content evaporates into an invisible vapor.

The vapor can be inhaled through the nose from the bottle, but this carries certain risks. If any liquid on the rim touches the skin, or if it spills onto the skin, it can cause irritation or a chemical burn.

To reduce risks, it’s recommended to leave the bottle open so the vapors can disperse into the room. The effects may be slightly less immediate, but remain very similar.

It usually starts with a pleasant warm sensation, along with a feeling of well-being (relaxation, mild euphoria) and an increase in libido.

Poppers can enhance sexual experience (by increasing intensity and prolonging orgasm), and they are also used to make anal sex easier because they help relax the anal muscles.

However, for some people, if the smell is too strong and they’re not used to it, they may have trouble getting or maintaining an erection while using it.

The most common side effect with prolonged use is headaches.

For healthy people, the health risks linked to poppers use are considered relatively low. They are much lower than those of other inhaled volatile liquids, often called “solvents”. However, they are not always harmless.

Poppers can cause poisoning if accidentally swallowed, but inhaling very large amounts can also lead to an overdose: nausea, vomiting, ... However, overdoses from alkyl nitrites (poppers) are rare, which suggests that normal use should not put someone in the danger zone.

If someone swallows poppers, they should go to the hospital as soon as possible. In addition to the risk of poisoning, swallowing poppers can cause throat irritation, nausea and vomiting.

People who use a lot of poppers may develop skin irritation around the nose.

Poppers can cause chemical burns if they come into contact with the skin; the area should be rinsed as quickly as possible.
If liquid gets into the eyes, it is very painful. This requires rinsing thoroughly with plenty of water. If discomfort persists, consult a doctor.

Poppers are also highly flammable. You should never try to heat a bottle of alkyl nitrite or keep an open bottle near a flame or a lit cigarette.

Poppers are not supposed to cause physical dependence in any way.

After using poppers regularly to enhance their sexual experiences, some people have reported feeling the need for it out of habit, in order to “perform” better. If this happens, avoid poppers for a while and return to a normal sex life.
