Shibari, or kinbaku, is the Japanese art of erotic bondage: ropes that squeeze, that draw patterns and that immobilise, as much for the eyes as for the sensation. What rope changes between two guys

The game starts with the first wrap. Tying takes time, and that's the point: the one tying takes possession of the other's body, centimetre by centimetre; the one being tied feels the rope tighten, his freedom of movement disappear, and ends up surrendering. Many find an almost meditative letting go in it.

Tips for use

• Always leave two fingers of room between the rope and the skin around wrists and ankles.
• Pull the rope slowly: dragged too fast across the skin, it can cause friction burns.
• Check circulation regularly: hands and feet should stay warm and pink, with no tingling.
• Start short, around fifteen minutes, then go longer depending on how your partner feels.

Safety and care

Never put rope around the neck. Avoid tightening the upper and inner arms, the inside of the wrists and the back of the knees, where delicate nerves run: tingling, numbness or loss of strength in the hand mean you must untie immediately. Keep round-tipped safety scissors within reach, never leave a tied person alone, and leave suspension to trained practitioners with dedicated equipment.

For care, hand-wash the rope in lukewarm water with a mild soap, rinse, then let it air-dry, unrolled, away from any heat source.

Q: Nylon or jute, what's the difference?

A: Jute, the traditional natural fibre of shibari, grips and holds knots very well, but it needs preparation and upkeep. Nylon is softer, slicker and washable, ideal for beginners: its knots come undone more easily, so tie them tight and check them during the session.

Q: Can it be cut shorter?

A: Yes, but you lose the metal end cap. Nylon melts under heat: pass the cut end quickly through a flame, carefully, to stop it fraying.

Q: Can I tie myself up?

A: Self-bondage is not recommended: nobody could untie you if you felt faint or numb. Always play with a partner, safety scissors within reach.
